iPhone Ringtones and College Dreams

Okay, I am definitely really really bad at this blogging thing, haha. Sorry about that.

Update on last post: The guy called again today, and my dad answered the phone, threatening to report him to the police if he didn’t stop calling. Jeez dad, way to overreact - poor guy. I’m glad to have the matter off my hands, though.

I’ve been looking at several universities lately. All American ones, actually. And all art schools that offer a program in graphic design. The schools that look most interesting are California College of the Arts, California Institute of the Arts, and School of Visual Arts. If anyone know of schools with similar programs, or have any experiences with the schools listed, I’d adore it if you could tell me about it. :)

The only issue is really the extreme cost of going to university in the states. I get a lot covered by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund, but only for the last 3 years of a Bachelor. Freshmen students aren’t eligible as European Bachelors only go over 3 years, not 4, so the first year is considered superfluous.

And even with the financial aid, I’ll still be knee deep in student loans when I finish. Yeah, I’m looking forward to that.

Again - if you’ve got any tips related to college application in the States, experience with being an international student, a story about that one international student in your class who was a freak, or a friend of a friend who almost got into an art school - I want to hear it!

In completely unrelated news, here’s my Super Mario ringtone for iPhone. It’s cropped to loop perfectly, hurrah. To use it for non-iPhone purposes, rename the file to mp4. That should make it act like a normal audiofile :) For the more quiet kind, I also found the Kim Possible beeper tone, which is great for text message notification as well as a short ringtone.

  1. Come to ACAD (Alberta College of Art & Design)! Yea, its in a really weird place (redneck Calgary), but the school and the design program are very good. They’ve turned out grads like Sam Weber and Joy Ang. Not only that, but school in Canada is significantly cheaper (I pay $5000 a YEAR as opposed to $14000 — international students pay $14,000 as opposed to $24,000) because its sponsored by the government. And yes, it’s a bachelor’s degree program.

Also! Socialized health care… and ME! :D Anyway, if you want to know more about the design program (which I’m in) feel free to email me. Obviously, since I’m in the program, I can give you an idea of what its like.

  2. I agree with Jacky. ACAD all the way! I don’t go there. :P I never will (I am not NEARLY talented enough!!). And although it’s in Calgary (which is a LOVELY city, but like all cities does have a few faults!!), its redeeming point is that it is in CANADA. And it has an AWESOME reputation. I mean, I don’t go there. I have had, like, two friends actually go there. I know Jacky goes there. And I STILL hear awesome things about ACAD. If I WAS talented in any way, I would go there in a HEARTBEAT. They also keep me entertained with their Art In Motion (art pieces displayed in public transit areas). Good luck with your school choices!

  3. Thanks for the Mario ringtone :-D I love it! Although I only came by for the ringtone, I’d suggest the Columbia and SCAD (lol, or the California one). I’m not there, or was - but I am planning on going to either, if to the states. You might also be interested in the UK, Bournemouth, Goldsmiths and Brighton are great places to go. Many artists from the web are from there…

  4. I’ve heard that Parsons The New School for Design (New York, NY) is good. I second your considering California Institute of the Arts. It’s an acknowledged school in (and out of) SoCal, and the campus is small but nice; they have an amazing view, although the campus buildings aren’t as impressive. :)
